“No, it’s really not,” I admitted. In fact, it was great if your only ambition was to get laid as much as possible in life. There wasn’t too much else to do so the sex was pretty available any time.

“Trevor!”

Before I could turn around to see Sean, he tackled me, and we fell to the ground in a heap.

He laughed like an idiot as I struggled back to my feet.

“Hey, drunk ass,” I said, offering him a hand up. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Looking for you,” he replied. “What are you doing?”

Sean looked pointedly from me to Riley and back to me. Fabulous, he thought I was fooling around with Riley. He really was drunk. Sean was well aware of the rules about sponsors, so if he were sober he would have remembered that Riley was straight. Hopefully, he would sleep off the booze and not even worry about what had happened tonight. I didn’t need him asking me questions I couldn’t answer.

“I’m on my way home. To sleep. Which is where you should be. Where’s Wes?” I asked, starting to walk toward my house.

“Looking for Sean,” a voice said up ahead. “What are you guys doing out here?”

“Well,” Sean said before I could answer. “I was looking for Trevor who apparently had a meeting with Riley on the base.”

Wes caught up to us and raised an eyebrow at me. I shook my head and rolled my eyes.

He nodded and put an arm around Sean to steer him toward their side of the island.

“Are you coming for dinner tomorrow?” Wes asked me.

“Of course. Thanks for the invite.”

“Any time,” he said with a smile. “I’m going to take drunky home and put him to bed. I’ll see you tomorrow. Riley, it was nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you, too, Doc.” Riley waved before turning to follow me back to the beach.

“Are you coming to the bonfire?”

“No way,” I said with a yawn. “I’m an old man. I need to get to bed.”

“Alone?” Riley asked.

“It looks that way.” I couldn’t keep the disappointment out of my voice. “Thanks again Riley, seriously. Sean would have flipped out if he had found Jasper and me together.”

“No problem, Trevor,” he said. “I’m headed back to the beach. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I nodded and headed home. The bed seemed too big and too empty. I had really been looking forward to spending more time with Jasper, and I hadn’t been ready to leave. As I closed my eyes and tried to will myself to sleep I hoped that Jasper wouldn’t freak out about Riley knowing and call an end to…whatever it was we were doing.

Jasper would just have to understand that it was difficult to keep a secret like this and it would be better for everyone if he just relaxed and let me tell people. What killed me about his inability to publicly commit to me was that I felt as if he was ashamed of me. Was I really so embarrassing to be with?

I vowed I would talk to him again after dinner with Wes and Sean the next night.
